flathead v8 serial number location

I am trying to get a bonded title. they say they need the serial number off the motor. looks to be a 49 a flathead v8. 24 head bolts and the water housings on the front of the head towards the top, has a automatic trans with a removable bell housing. found a B center of the rear of the engine in front of the bell housing and also a j 383 on the passenger side of the rear of the engine. where would a serial number be? they say they need this number to check and see if its stolen. any info would help.
