Flathead V8 engine....

Can someone tell where to look and what to look for to determine which engine I have?It is on a trailer built for a welding machine long ago.The engine looks much like the one in my 40.There are no letters or markings of any kind that I can find, viewing the engine from outside. It has 18mm spark plugs and the distributor is the diver's helmet front mount type. The heads are 24 stud with center water necks.Could this be an industrial engine? Thanks.

Most likely '38 - 41, but, one can be fooled by the bolt-ons. If it is as I say, you can set a pencil on the block above the timing cover, and it will stay there.

Ive never seen a 24 stud motor with 18 mm plugs. There usually 14 mm.?? ken ct. Sounds like a 38-41 motor.

21 stud heads had 18mm plugs, 24 stud had 14 mm. Double check your stud count, 5 on the bottom are 21 stud, 8 on the bottom are 24 stud.

The engine I have is indeed a 21 stud.I thought(erroniously) that the center water hoses were all 24 stud.WRONG! Thank you for your help. ajohn
