flathead v8 belt how tight?

Any wisdom out in the barn on how snug the belt should be on my 52 f1? I have heard not too much or you risk water pump falure, I think the engine is all original and has had no upgrades such as improved pumps. I just replaced front bearing and rear bushing in generator but on a hot day I hear belt noise. I have it some what snug now. too much? Ken

Yep! .75 to 1'' WORKS FINE RETIGHTEN A NEW BELT AFTER 500 TO 1000 OR SO MILES . wORKS FINE FOR ME TO.

1 inch total movement or a 1/2 inch in and a 1/2 inch out. The bearings and bushings will take more then most people think. Just don't jack them up like a banjo string. G.M.

and a quick fix for belt noise.... keep a bar of soap in the glove box!! I prefer irish spring.
