flathead in 31 Model A Tudor

Being new to this, I am sure this question is worn out. I want to put a flathead in my 31 Tudor. I cannot afford all the racing stuff, but rather just have a flathead that will fit with the least amount of mods to frame and drive train/chassis. I do want to change steering boxes, and a friend has a 32 B syncronized transmission he will give me. Do I need a 60 HP engine or would the 85 be a better choice. I am not worried about speed or horsepower, just want a smooth running ride. Also, do I need to change steering front axle and brakes? I have found an 85 HP engine for $500. Any guidance? Thanks!

Go to the Hamb, sign up, use the search function and look for threads by Gashog. He has a very informative thread with tons of pics. Pretty much all the info you need is in that one thread. Also the 85hp engine will be much more satisfactory than the 60hp. He has done a very simple but effective swap that works well. Good luck.

Vern Tardel wrote the best book on converting the A to a Flathead. Someone here will probably tell you where you can get one.

I think that there's a project underway that might be of interest to you. A fellow by the name of Terry Burtz has been working of a new version of the Model A engine using a modern crankshaft with five main bearings. Here's a link:

Big problem is that it's not quite ready and there's a LONG line waiting for it.

I drove Walts Model A and had anice ride in it and I really don't see the advantage of building a new engine. The original can be modified to be a real reliable street car. With a Mitchel OD interstates speeds can be achieved but the suspension and brakes would be a safety issue,

Stay away from the 60. A hopped up banger is better than the 60. And get the tardel book. It has all the info you need to know.

Hi: Some of the parts for an 'old school' conversion are now Rare and very expensive! Also one 'how to' book recommended a 33\34 wishbone when it should of been a 32 [very expensive]. I would look for a cheap method, Possibly some local rod builder. Newc
