flathead identificaton questions...

Just curious. I've got the pan off the 24 stud engine in my '33. The heads have the "A" on them and there's no "59" on the bellhousing, so I've always assumed it to be a '39-'41 engine. It does have the flat expansion plugs in the pan rail that I've always associated with the 21 studs, didn't know they carried that to the 24 studs but maybe it disappeared with the 59AB? The rods have a "91A" on them and the intake surface is flat with the top of the block, not raised. It has an oil filter on the driver's side head that has a Mercury sticker on it. Is it a '39-'41 Ford engine or same year Mercury engine? Wasn't there a Mercury engine somewhere in those years that was unique? Just curious, thanks.

Info I've seen indicates that the pan rail core plugs disappeared early in '41. Do you know the bore diameter? My '42 Merc does not have them, but it does have the raised intake surface.

Those early Mercury engines from 39 thru 40 usually had 81T casting figures on the heads. Sometimes they stamped 99 on the front passenger side of the intake machined surface but not on all engines. The bore thicknesses and water port shapes on the cylinder decks were unique to the 99 series 239 CID blocks.

The Merc blocks were a little different in the front above the timing cover, Fords were sloped and the Merc's had a definite ledge.
