Flathead cams

I had a man approach me about buying a bunch of flathead parts. He said most are old speed parts. Aluminium heads and intakes and cranks and cams. And a bunch of starters and distributers. I was going to look at buying the whole lot of the stuff. The cranks should not be to hard to tell what they are. But he said there are quite a few cams. And some are not labeled. How can I tell what they are?

Either put them in an engine and degree them or do the same with a Cam Doctor.
Even if some are stamped with a manufacturers number, they could have been reground to something else.

I will see what I can figure out. The guy was a big hot rod guy out of Amarillo. The guy that approached me got them off the ok guys son. He said it was a whole pickup full.

Best advice I can give is the base circle of an original stock cam is 1.65". Lock a micrometer a couple thou above and go through the pile and buy them for good cores.

I have not seen the stuff. I just know there is a bunch of stuff. I have had people tell me to come look at stuff before. And it ends up being some old farmers junk pile. This guy knows nothing about flatheads. Just antique tractors. I know there is some of everything. Even a bunch of Nos pistons. He did say there were some tri power intakes and duel carb intakes that are aluminium.

Why are you wasting time talking about this stuff and why aren't you over there loading it into your pickup?

He lives in Amarillo and I live in stephenville. That's a long drive. He is going to be coming down to visit his dad in a few weeks.

I don't know for sure what all there is. This guy sure has no idea what he has. He got it cheap. And knew he could sell it to me if it's any good.

He should be down this way soon. They are not going anywhere. He said I could be the first to go through it. I hope its good stuff. With it cooling off. It's about to be time to go out and start finding good stuff. Once the snakes are gone. I have managed to find a lot of flatheads over the summer. But a lot I am going to have pull out of cars and trucks. Should be a busy winter there are a ton of them.
