Flathead Blues

Thanks Charley, I purchased the Accel 8140C that was recommended for the Mallory duel point distributor because of the resister needed between dist and coil. Have actually had to new coils with no success

Thanks GM, The fuel pump is not leaking and again I have put two new fuel pumps on with no luck. I have had no problems with the 12volt system since I restored in in the early 90s, it has always ran great with never a problem until this happened. I do agree and I do consider me a purist I love my car as an ALMOST original car not to many around today. Thanks again

Thank you I will do that. You are right when I was using the original distributor it did run very well, But out here in Ca. I felt my lighting should be better and there was a lot drag on my starter but I did not think you could use the original dist with 12volt, now I am aware you can and that the dist. does not recognise 6 or 12 volts but coil does. I have thought about putting the original back on but how do you feel about the coil adapter on the distributor and running 12volt coil?

forget the spark tester ,You can use a spare spark plug widen the gap to 1/4 and see what colour it is when you roll the starter .if it runs by pumping the gas pedal ,then pull the top of the carb and check the level if its near the bottom then you have a fuel delivery problem check the pump or set up a gas supply in the passengers seat with a rubber hose into it ,run around the block a few times ,this will tell you if you have problems sth of the pump .I think you may have both a fuel problem and electrical . try and eliminate one thing at a time ,Ted
Thank you for the quick response. Just to be clear, check for spark after the motor dies? Should I connect a spark plug tester to see if Im getting fire when it misses? not sure what you mean. When it starts missing it seems if I continue to pump the gas pedal or throttle on carb I can keep it running barely.

Thank you but I do not have an electric fuel pump. When I checked the pump when it first did this the bolts around the top of the pump were not real tight and gas was around the edge. Sorry for the bad info.

Deuce, I have the fuse block with resister are you saying that a resister can heat up and fail but when cools down it will work again. I have checked all connections but did not consider resister getting weak I thought it would either work or not.

Good point Ted I will do that. I will say when it is doing this I have put my camcorder down the throat of the carb to see if gas is still jetting and it is, but pulling the top off after it dies would be better i guess. Thank you

I had a nice 56 F350 express that would do that time to time. Drove me nuts. It too
acted like vapor lock but I knew it was not or electrical. Gas tanks are behind the
front seat, so with empty I took off the fuel sender with flash light I find a long green
sliver. My thought was the sliver sloshing around would find its way to the pipe
cause there is suction there. All I can think of is someone- not me- siphoned gas
with a green garden hose and got slit in it. Now on the vapor lock. I grew up with
these since new & till this day I have never walked with a Ford however I had a V8
346 Caddilac that did vapor lock all the time (exhaust manifolds right up there near
the carb. so sometimes its something simple and stupid....

A quick and easy check that has worked for me on several occasions is to hook up a strobe timing light to coil wire and attach the light to the dash where you can see it and go for a drive.

[I would put the old distributor back at least as a trial the adapter will except 12Volt .You should consider my suggestion of a direct wire to the battery ,by pass all the dash wires you may need to run a resister in the circuit if its run for any length of time ., the pumping of the gas to keep it going is a indicator of blocked jets but you have changed carbs ,? I worked with a guy who had a stumbling engine and he got confused and ended up putting faulty stuff back on ,You can run with a few screws in the carb and lift the top when it plays up .Ted

What ballast resistor are you using? Is it a new type with a ceramic housing or the original type? The original resistor will not work correctly.
