Has anyone seen a flathead block with a maple leaf cast on the rear of the block? A friend contacted me about a Canadian block he's interested in selling. I asked how he knew it was Canadian his answer there's a maple leaf on the back.
I dont know if the block is a 59A type or late block 8BA type.

Never seen one with a Maple Leaf but if it is a Canadian block it will have 3 ports on the rear left side. USA blocks seem to all have 2.

Ronnie,
You can tell if its a 59 or an 8 by the bell housing. If there is half of a bell housing cast into the block its a 59ab and if there is a bolted on bell then its likely an 8ba

Well he said he didn't know I was trying to help is all. Some Canadian engines also had 69 ab cast into them.

Yep! had to chuckle at that one, but I wonder if some rambunctious employee at the casting plant made up a maple leaf shaped tool and made an impression in the sand just before casting for laughs. Could maybe even be more than one.

Canadian block's casting #s start with C
Do a search on this forum--C 59 A, C 81 A, C69 A , etc ; lots of posts -pictures

If you can upload pictures of the Maple Leaf

Thanks for posts!

When I read the first post I did not get the impression that Ron had ever seen the block that is in question or that he had pictures of it.
Some here seem to think that he has seen it and has pictures of it.
For those with a need to see a maple leaf, here is one on the back of an 8BA along with three oil ports (maybe that makes it Canadian  )

Thanks for all the input guys. Looks like I have to see the block myself the owner of the block said it is a 59A type. If I decide its worth buying I will post a picture for all to see. 4tford noted the Canadian block has three oil port holes on the left side that's something I have never come across more interesting stuff.
51 MERC-CT your picture shows three ports but I have a feeling one has been added by someone and that maple leaf is a different color what's going on here? Trick photography possibly!

My C59A is Canadian. It has C59A embossed on the block in front of the left head, but no maple leaf anywhere. Canadian engines had thick insert rod bearings, like 8BA but thicker. I had to convert this engine to floaters because the thick inserts are unobtanium.

The third port has indeed been added, no trick photography, just that the leaves haven't turned yet ( at least on my tree :) )

that xtra port is for oil cooler outlet, used in some military applications, ie Bren gun carriers , British & canadian , small tracked, personell carriers that all used the flathead V8 motor , trans & rear axle.

Problem solved!! I just noticed on mine, on the right side of the bellhousing is a maple leaf! Well, I dont think it is, it looks like a set of numbers embossed, but it is pretty much in the shape of a maple leaf. If the numbers were full of grime I guess it could look like one.... well to a blind man....

Canada did not adopt the maple leaf until 1965. Now let's start a theory how a block left in the woods had a maple leaf fossilized into it.

That looks like a sweet gum leaf to me. Of course we have more sweet gums than maples down here, so I could be confused. LOL
