Flathead Block Price Range

Barners,

Does anyone have some price ranges for buying flathead blocks? The block is stripped down with broken studs, has no visible cracks but has not been magnafluxed. However is clean and there is no visible damage. It appears to be a 38-42 85hp block as it has trapezoidal main center water jackets. There are serial numbers nor casted into IDs such as a "59".

Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Best regards,

Conrad

$100 with the broken studs and another $50 to guarantee it will be useable or the $100 back

I have several blocks with no visable cracks... They (mine) are all cracked. Most people ran these until they died... So, when you see a pile of flathead engine that look well weathered your best bet is...
I drove my 1939 Tudor around town, ran clean- didn't puke out water, had three cylinders with HUGE cracks, cyl to valve...

Get a cash back guarrantee that comes from a trusted source, or get them real cheap... I've brought back junk and been refused.
My top price for a suspect engine might be $100, but I've got spares.

Magnaflux will show up cracks that are invisible to the naked eye. Further, water jackets can be severely corroded.
I wouldn't pay more than 50 bucks for an early block, unless it's a Merc, and even then only if I needed one.

I understand about magnafluxing, in fact spent time doing so on heads and intakes in a shop in HS.

I guess I was asking more along the lines if many run for ever with no visible cracks (but may have some)...what's a "suspect block?

Is a suspect block one that hasn't been magnafluxed?...or are there other things?

A suspect block is one that hasn't been proven to be defect free. Must be magnafluxed and pressure tested.
