Flat Head Oil Filter

I bought a used assembly and the guy who I bought from shipped it w 85 yrs of crud in and on it. I opened the package and found it to be heavier than it should've been. He left either what he or the last person using it used as a filter element, a soggy black gunky roll of toilet paper:eek::mad:

I changed a few rolls of toilet paper in late fifties or early sixties when I worked in St.Paul. As I recall they came out in mush.
I worked for a guy from Afghanistan that told me back there they couldn’t always get oil filters and they were way too expensive so they would cut the spin-on oil filter for his fathers Datsun open & repack lt with rags and solder it shut and screw it back on.
While I was still working there the father, and mother, escaped into India ( during the Russian occupation) and when they finally got here the old man bought my Fiat 131.
We had to teach him to throw used oil filters and spark plugs away. They could be filed, cut open repacked and used again. He Saved all the spark plugs but not the oil filters. I gues he must have heard,”the Russians are coming”.

Old toilet paper (age wise, not old as in used!) was acceptable in filter housings made for it or adapted to it. New toilet paper is water soluble and breaks down with moisture. Engines get plenty of moisture so the paper breaks down and can plug things! Frantz toilet paper bypass filters sell a proper roll of non soluble paper that works fine.

Some good toilet paper stories here for sure,....especially during these recent times of little to none on store shelves, and all the hoarding going on :D ;) ;)
