flange nuts

I would just look up the fastener size and thread and go with that. I have been running around and hauling with these tonners for over 30 years and never had an axle flange nut loosen up. Make sure you use new lock washers for cheap insurance, and a dab of loctite never hurts. Oh, and I for one would like to hear about this tonner and of course pictures are important too. Welcome to the 'Barn. Gary

Hi Gary, We bought this ford last year at Iron city garage in Pittsburgh Pen shipped it over to the Netherlands, and is now being restored to a Dutch made army car from 1938 . They were imported as much as 300 as chassis and cabine. This was done by the Van Doorne,s trailer company ,witch was later known as the Daf truck company (now owned by Paccar)
The trucks were called Pag Trekker. They where infantry truks with a small cannon behind it.I bougt the brake cables from you last year. greets Hans

Nice job on the chassis, Hans. Tell me, though, does your front axle need straightening? It should be straight when viewed from above.
Mart.

Never thought off that, it is indeed not straight . So this is not standard for a 1 ton 38 axle? If so, is it easy to straighten under a press? without breaking?
Hoping you will reply

greetings hans

Hans, your front axle should be straight when viewed from above.

This bent axle is a direct result of the vehicle being towed by a chain or rope wrapped around the CENTER of axle, at the point of the bend. Just one sudden jerk by the tow vehicle can produce the result you see here. In the case of this type axle/wishbone/spring set-up, always attach your tow strap or chain at the juncture where the wishbone and axle rigidly connect via the perch pin. Coop

Measure between the two perch pins. YOUR axle may be a common '37-'41 car axle, or a '42-'48 car axle. See chart below. I would REPLACE that axle. Coop
