Fixing Transmission Leak

I am about to kick off some winter repairs to my Model A and will be removing the rear end and figured I might as well fix my leaky transmission while I'm at it. It appears it is leaking out the back through the universal joint.

Besides replacing the bearings with a new set of shielded on one side bearings (#40, #8 on the diagram below) what other parts should I plan on replacing?

Are any specialized tools required to replace the bearings?

You might consider installing the transmission seal kit http://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/transmission-seal-kit or install the new cluster gear shaft and reverse idler shaft that are machined for 'O' rings. Both ways are to stop the transmission shafts from leaking.

I installed the 'Kit" ~ one year ago and it is so leak free it's starting to rust!! :p:p

In addition to sealed ball bearings and O-rings on the cluster and idler shafts, there is another item to consider. The bolt and washer that holds the U-joint onto the main shaft has a special washer with a notch in it. Most of the suppliers carry it. It is important to use this correct washer. When installing the U-joint put some sealer around the front edge of the U-joint where it fits up against the rear bearing. Also put some sealer of the front of the special washer. This will prevent oil from migrating out through the splines of the main shaft.

You will need the use of a shop press to remove and install the front and rear ball bearings.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm thinking I'll just replace the shafts with the o ring version while I have it apart for the new bearings.

Some prefer to chamfer the hole opening a smidge to facilitate the oring installation... i have done them both ways. just lube them and be careful to not cut the ring
