Fitting the oil pump pick up (M19 pump)

Hi guys, How do you go about it?
I have just sat the sump on and it doesn't sit down with the new screen in the pump pick up. I have judiciously (carefully) bent the tube down in the vice, but not enough yet.
I wondered if the guys who do a lot of these have any advice?
Do you work to a measurement off the pan face? The screen probably shouldn't be touching the pan at all.
I have by the way cut the baffle from the sump pan. It is a wartime sump pan and the recommended pick up.
Thanks in advance.
Lynn.

You're correct the screen does not touch the bottom of the pan. That space is reserved for the junk that will settle from the oil as it circulates. I have a Melling pump on my 52 EAB and as I recall the top of the screen is only about 2-3 inches below the crank assembly putting the bottom of the screen deep enough in the oil to not suck air.
Try setting your pan on a flat area so it is level, place 5 qts of water in it, see where the "water line ends up on the pan, measure from the waterline to the top edge of the pan. This will give you a reference point to where yo want that pick-up to be. Just a thought.

With the M19 pump you have to use the truck pickup tube, differant pans you usually have to bend the tube a little. It''s easy with engine upside down, I take a piece of tin and cover the crank and a small torch and heat the tube a couple of inches from the pump and bend the screen area where you want it. Walt

As a reference this is the oil screen to pan clearance on a 50' Merc. pan.
The math says 9/16" clearance plus the gasket.
