Fitting floor mats

I just got a new floor mat from Bratton's for my '29 Roadster. It is oversize on both sides and the back. Does anyone have suggestions on how best to cut this to fit? I assume one cuts the back off to fit up to the seat support. On the sides I guess I need to cut to fit next to the sill-if overlaps now. Forward of the sils does one let it roll up the side or try to cut to match the side panels (curved). Suggestions on technique welcome

Fit and trim a cardboard template in the mat area of the floor then trim the rubber mat according to the cardboard template and then "Let'er Buck"!

Good advise. It does work.

You don't have to have all one piece of cardboard. Use maybe more than one then duct tape them together after you get each piece to fit.

Had the same issue with a Snyders mat.(30 coupe) Fit side to side but 1" over front to back assuming it is to fit between the sills. They checked the Ford print and suggest the mat dimensions are correct. My car is unmodified in this area. I may purchase a few of the hold down rivets for the mat to keep it in place and leave the 1" overshang toward the ruumble seat where it is out of view.

They must all be oversized. I bought a new mat for my '29 Roadster and had to trim it. I had the old mat to use as a guide, but the idea offered by Pluck and Fred K would work just the same. Make a template, then use it as a guide for your utility knife. To paraphrase an old carpenter's line, "measure twice, trim once".

You really have to trim the mats? I was going to buy one but I don't want to trim it to make it fit, I thought these were exact repros? Were the original mats trimmed to fit??

This is done so the same mat can be used for various body styles. Usually you only have to trim the back edge by the seat riser and this is done pretty easily with a long straight edge and a razor knife.
