All 1911 blocks have the serial number by the oil filler. During mid fiscal year / model year 1912 the serial number moved to above the water inlet. Casting dates for that type of block are about mid January 1912.
The open valve block was used into the middle of 1911 model year. The closed valve chamber showed up on blocks about the middle of November, 1910. There would have been left over open valve engines being used up for perhaps the next month.
Thanks for the reply Royce. Enjoy, I sold my T last year to get the money to buy a 1911 EMF touring. Kinda miss a T. I am looking for a magneto like the one pictured. Splitdorf model D I also have a Splitdolf model F which is similar for trade or swap or sale.
Frank,
On the Splitdorf D, be aware that the cap tilts one way for EMF, the other way for Mitchell and straight up for other cars.
If you run across a TT with a cap on both ends, do let me know.
Good luck in your search.
My 1911 open Runabout was assembled on March 31, 1911 and had open valve block, square hole transmission cover and "removable bottom" on the engine pan, as confirmed by the original Ford Motor Co build sheet.
