First real attempt at woodgraining

After rescuing the original woodgraining and putting a headliner in my Town Sedan, a local A friend asked me to do a complete interior and woodgraining in his 30 Deluxe Coupe. Ordered the interior from Lebarron Bonney yesterday, they said 4 weeks and that they are swamped ! I said GOOD, that's a good sign for the hobby !:)
Keeping track of time, I spent 8 1/2 hours stripping, doing dolly work and filling holes in his dash. Yesterday, I shot two coats of polyurethane over my grain job. Today it is dry and ready for some more sanding and another coat. Thought I "wood" share my efforts with the Barn. I'm really proud of the results and the guy is astonished ! ( they were really rusty and hammered up). Havin' fun doin something A every day !

Your woodgraining looks great!
I'm just about to do the woodgraining on the trim for my Town Sedan and have been following the directions from Tacoma Bob. I've used the Indian Fire Metallic that he recommends but it seems to have quite a bit of metallic even after graining with the gel stain on a test piece.
I was wondering if you could tell me what you used for a base color on yours.

Thanks for all the nice comments.I kinda threw together several methgods and made some up on my own. I use a regular old red oxide primer as a base color ! It seems perfect for the mahogany look and it matches up perfectly with the back of my original town sedan moldings. Then I mix rustoleum black and rustoleum brown enamel with some linseed oil and Japan dryer. I brush it on with a very ragged artist brush about 1/4" wide. It is scraggley and this adds to the irregular distribution of the graining.
Then I use another old natural white bristle brush, the cheap ones you used to be able to buy in hardware stores. I spread the grain color with this brush a little. Then I use another broader brush just like it to "remove" some of the top color. Then I do little short strokes in the color, wiping the brush clean between strokes. This produces the tiny dark lines that resemble the mahogany grain.
I let it dry a few days and then lightly sand it with one of those 3m skotchgard type pads they have in the paint store. Then I use polyurethane clear topcoat and apply it in several coats with an airbrush. Let dry, sand, and repeat until smooth. Sand one final time and then use rubbing compound, then polishing compound, and a final swirl remover and imperial glaze for a brilliant shine. easy ! and fun! try it...or send them moldings to me. I love new projects !
 
In case I lost you on that lengthy explanation, here are a few photos of all the supplies I used to do the graining. The photos of the moldings taken inside against the wooden tabletop show little exagerated specks that are not there in "person" They are reflections of the lighting. The ones taken outside of the dash rail are more realistic. Thanks again for all the interest.
