First look at steering...

Gents/ladies - I am doing an off frame restoration of a 1930 Coupe and now have easy access to dismantling the steering as the coach is off the frame. I have quite a bit of play (2-2.5" either side of center) in the steering wheel, and have decided to replace drag link and seats due to wear.

QUESTION: before I dive into a complete rebuild - which I will be challenged with guaranteed - is there any quick "check and fix list" for the steering column to reduce play and increase directional integrity without completely rebuilding???

Sure hope someone has some ideas for this rookie!!!!! :D:D:D

Follow the instructions in the Ford Service Bulletins on steering box adjustment. You
may have to repeat several time as one adjustment can affect the others.

Check everything in the front end/steering. When you remove the springs and cups in the drag link/tie-rods, check the balls. If they are more than about .020" worn [should be 1" if memory serves] they really should be replaced.
A good repair manual and the Ford service bulletins are pretty much required.
