What was your first car and has it affected your car collecting???

My first car was a 30 Model A Ford coupe. Traded it for a 53 Plymouth to drive to and from college. The Model A sparked an interest that has continued throughout my life. What is your story?

First car was a 41 cheby coupe back in 1960.it was in perfect running cond. and everything worked in it including the vacume shift.Paid $45 for it the dealer wanted $50 and i got it for $45.LOL ken ct.

My first ride might not be all that interesting since I"m a younger guy but here goes... In high school I drove my dad's 83 F150, it wasn't mine but I sure took care of it like it was! It was a 14 year old pickup but I kept a nice waxed shine on it! My first vehicle was a 98 F150 that my grandfather gave me in the fall of 98 as a birthday / graduation gift. :o I was pretty blown away (and humbled) by it and had never imagined I would have a vehicle given to me like that, except that he always said his Model A would be mine someday. I never took him seriously but I had a lot of good memories with him and his Model A. Fast forward 13 years later after my grandfather passed away my Dad, Aunt and Uncle agreed the Model A should be mine so I picked it up with my 98 F150 that I still have and towed it home to Washington. 185,000 trouble free miles and its still going. I don't plan on parting with either one of them!

Great story!! Beautiful car and truck!! Thanks for shaing. Tom in SW VA Have a great day!!

The first car I ever drove (in about 1966 or '67) was my dad's '31 DeLuxe Roadster that he purchased in 1963. I took my driver's license test in a '29 Phaeton (pictured below) in 1976. This car was purchased new by my great, great aunt & uncle in Enid, OK where they traded a 1924 Model-T and 40 acres of land for it. My father found the car in a ditch in NW Missouri in the mid-sixties and restored the car. The car today still has the same Balsam & Valley paint job that he sprayed in our backyard during the restoration.

I guess what affected me in collecting, --and my occupation is that I grew up around them working with my Dad in his hobby. I was fortunate enough that I later turned my dad's hobby into my living. The 2nd picture below is of me in late 1960 or early '61 on the fender of my dad's first Model-A that he purchased off of a used car lot in downtown Houston in 1957 or '58. This was about 5 years before the Houston Model-A club was even formed.

The final picture is the car we drove away from the church on my wedding day in 1988. While the girl is still my prized possession, that Tudor is long gone now as is the Pick-up however the '29 Phaeton and the '31 Roadster are still in the family collection. Yes, I guess you could say that being around Model-A's as a kid did influence my life somewhat! :D

My first car was a 1930 A four door sedan given to me by folks in May 1963 as a graduation gift. It was an amateur restoration and his name was Hector, but I loved him. Three months I later Lost control backing down a hill at 25 MPH and wrapped the rear spare around a 3' dia. pine tree! I ended up in the back seat and cried. That was the start of my Model A restoration education.

Montana Ford Man, you should post that same photo and story on the Ford Facebook site if you can. I am sure it would be popular.

My first car was a 1930 Model A coupe that I never quite got on the road. I then bought a '56 Chevy for my everyday car and sold the A when I went to college. I never forgot that car and finally, 42 years later, I bought another Model A. In the interim I also picked up a '47 Chevy woodie cheap that I later sold, but worked on for a few years.

Great photos and stories, Brent. I love the pickup.

My 25 y.o. son got to drive my Model A during the holidays and is very excited about the new acquisition. This is how we keep the hobby going, plus driving our cars as much as we can. I live in the Washington, DC area and attract an amazing amount of attention when I take my car out. You would think that no one had ever seen an old car before.

When I was 12 my uncle gave me his A that he had parked when he went off to college in 1954.I really had no interest in mechanics before that.At that point I was interested in nothing but mechanics,at least until I discovered girls and later still, beer.I Pulled the coupe body off, because it had been used as a truck from the war years forward.I put a closed cab on,with a bed,and later an open cab.I had replaced the frame because it was bent downward in the rear from farm use.I later replaced that frame because I found a better one when I had the truck apart.I still have the truck.I can see it through the window of the shed from where I am sitting.I couldn't use an A to get my drivers license in 1972.We had to demonstrate proper use of safety equipment, and the A didn't have it.We were told that if we could show the A was the only vehicle available we could use it.BUT,to get a license at 16 we had to take drivers ed,and part of the drivers ed was the use of a car to take the test. That's not the case any more.A couple of years ago we watched a young fellow take his test in a phaeton.

My first car was a 29 closed cab pickup. An elderly neighbor had it and told me he would sell it to me for 250 bucks. I mowed lawns for two summers and saved up half the money and on my fourteenth birthday my dad ponied up the other half. This was in 1967. We had a small farm and my dad would let me drive it around the farm as long as I didn't leave the farm. But of course that didn't last to long and as soon as dad was gone I would sneak out the back gate and go on some pretty long backroad trips. I've had many model a's since then and still have two,That my 84 year old dad and I still work on. I still have dreams about that first model A.Sharing this hobby with my father has made me the envy of all my friends and they all tell me how lucky I am to be able to spend so much time with my Dad. Later, Frank

my first car was a 1930 dodge coupe with a vack fuel pump that did not work gave 50 dollars for it this was in 1944 two month later sold it for 95 dollars last car i think i ever made money on next was a 1930 model A coupe for 200 ben hooked on model A ever since now have 7

My first car was a 1949 Olds club coupe with a flathead six engine and hydramatic drive (this was in 1957). This was just before they came out with the neat "bubble coupe" in, I think, 1950, with the '88 engine.

My next car was a 1949 Ford club coupe with the flathead V-8, and I liked that one a lot more.

Here is a picture of my first car. I was 13 years old and the year was 1960.

I never knew that $75 could buy so much work! I drove it around the farm, and then when I was old enough to get my driver's license, I continued to drive it looking that way for a couple more years.

Fast forward about 50 years, and here is the same 1929 Model A Ford pickup along with the rest of my vehicles at the time. Yes, I think that my original car purchase influenced what kind of car I would buy in the future.

My first and last old car was the 1929 Murray Town Sedan seen in my avatar, purchased in 1960 for $200.

My first vehicle was a 1954 chexxy 1/2t pickup i paid $225. for and went to Grand Auto to by spark plugs for a 59 cents each!

Great stories. I forgot to mention I had a 1954 F250 for a long time, too. Now I have a 2007 F150. My next car will probably be a Ford, too, although I have driven foreign makes for decades.

My first "car" was actually a truck. A 1931 AA 280A Ambulance. My dad bought it from a coal mine in northern New Mexico and used it as a church bus. When we moved away, he sold it to a guy that used it to haul groceries for his store in a little rural town in SW NM. It was then sold to a farmer who used it to transport workers to the fields. The farmer had "loaned" it to one of his foreman who then took it down to Mexico. When I was 14 I got the bug to get that truck for my own. Dad and his farmer friend went down into Mexico and retreived it for me. It had been used there to haul adobe bricks, and it was a mess. Cost me $45. After I cleaned it up, went to register it in Arizona where we then lived, and discovered that since it was titled as a commercial vehicle, that the tags were going to cost me about $150. My paper route wouldn't support that, so we went about trying to register it as a passenger car. Had to install "permanent" seats (from a junk yard pickup and school bus) in the back and finally got it registered as a "Country Squire" which was the name of the new Ford Station Wagons in 1954-55. Drove it that way for the next several years until I got the urge to have something a little easier to navigate. Found a 31 Fordor that had nothing north of the firewall. Bought that for $30 and took everything off the ambulance that would fit and made a wonderful car that I drove all over Arizona for the next couple of years. No more Model A's until I got the pickup in my avitar about 3 years ago.

When I was 151/2 I bought my first car, a 31 Model A std coupe. I spent 6 months painting it with a brush and reupholstering it with white and red naugahide. When I turned 16, I took my driving test in it and got my license. What a thrill.

First car was a 1965 mustang gt fastback. It got me started on old cars and I have had at least one old car for the last 30 years. went from only mustangs 65-70, then to 60's muscle , then went to the 50's cars, and on to the 30's thru 40's cars. I appreciate and enjoy them all . and all makes too. but fords are my favorite.

My own first car was a 1976 Firebird. I bought in in '82 when I was a senior in high school and my bank loan was 16.8% interest!!!
I first learned to drive with a '51 ford pickup, then a '66 corsair, and others that my parents had for us to use. That included a tin lizzy parade car that we'd ride around the block when we were probably 10 years old. My current A's are a 30 tudor and 31 coupe.
