Firewall

There are several holes in the firewall of my 30 coupe including the typical manifold heater hole. I do not have adequate bodyworking skills to do a good job so the work will have to be done by professionals. The firewall is otherwise straight and in good shape. I will be taking the body off the frame for the restoration. There is a possibility I can get a firewall that is in good condition at a reasonable price and was considering just replacing the firewall instead of repairing it. I have seen threads addressing this that focus on the technique of dealing with the spot welds etc but I am wondering how difficult it is to replace one and what other factors should be considered in making such a decision. Also has anyone had any experience with the repro firewalls that are available?

Ray P,

Only having repaired a couple of 30-'31 cowls, I would think that it might be easier to deal with extra holes, rather than try to swap out for a better one.

There is a really good chance that the good shape cowl also has extra holes, once you start counting.

Also, I have found that those extra manifold heater holes are good spots for mounting that accessory temperature gauge. Funny part is that the passenger can't see the gauge and wonder what you keep looking at.

Since you must rely on somebody else I strongly suggest NOT changing the firewall! I've seen more damage done by 'experts' changing firewalls than you would imagine. In reality either is not a huge issue for those that truly know what they are doing but if someone says it's easier to change it than to patch it then they aren't really qualified for either but will likely do less damage patching.
