Firewall Main wiring rubber grommet question

Is there some type of spacer that goes on the backside of the rubber grommet that is used for the wiring harness that comes thru the cab into the engine bay area, so that there is no slop and the grommet seal the hole from any fumes that may get by?

See photo attached? What did I do wrong

I'm not sure but shouldn't the firewall cover and associated insulation padding take up this slack?

I don't believe any insulation inside the cab has been cut away, but I will look into that, and as far as I know the 46-48 did not use a wire cover on the firewall side, if I am incorrect please correct me.

Not that, the tin cover on outside was indeed not used then.
The slack encompasses ~1/2" of fuzzy insulation stuff and then fits over a matching oval hole in the cardboard stuff visible from inside the car. Normally the neat hole in the cardboard is all wallowed out after 60 plus years and does not control the grommet at all. If you push the grommet all the way in from the firewall side and glue it there it will look right in the engine bay and stay in place.
