Finding VIN location 1949 Ford Tudor

Do not have a plate on the firewall showing VIN.

Where on the frame is the VIN likely to be found and how do you see it without disassembling the car or parts of it?

Thanks in advance for input. Have the car sold but the buyer's lender insists on having the VIN photographed.

The serial number for 1949 was on a metal tag on the right (passenger) side near the hood hinge. The serial number was also stamped into the right frame rail, just back of the radiator support. If you find it on the frame use a wire brush to enhance it. A Dremel Moto-Tool and rotary brush works well for this. Once you find it go to this site:

This will explain the meaning. It is also good in case you can't quite make out the stamp.

On the right frame rail ( in the engine compartment) there is an angled brace that runs toward the radiator. The ID # is stamped on the top of that brace.

Picture attached shows serial number plate on firewall of 49 Ford. Tubes are convertible top hydraulic lines.

Hope this helps,

Tom

any photos of the 1949 Ford vin tag ?

Not a big deal, but there are not really VIN numbers/tags/etc this early on. VIN came along later in time, this time period they are Serial Numbers.

"VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States. From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats. ... Modern VINs are based on two related standards, originally issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1979 and 1980: ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, respectively."

Your best bet may be to look for the number stamped on the frame brace. The V8 100ph should be something like 98BA-101 thru 948236 and I6 95hp would be 98HA-101 thru 173310. Here is an example from an earlier post: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52095

I have a highly customized 1949 coupe 98BA328973 with an aftermarket vin tag. The brace with the stamping on the right side was probably removed when the mustang 11 rack and pinion was installed. Is there anywhere else it may be stamped? Some states it’s illegal to put an aftermarket vin tag on.
