Finally some color!

I finally took care of my problem with the door alignment and completed attaching the body to the frame. This weekend I painted the lower body and this afternoon painted the upper body and clear coated it all. After 3+ years it is a very welcome sign to finally see some color. Now I need to complete sanding the fenders and hood then paint them. I see some light .....!

When you get your fenders on, you are going to have a beautiful A. Thats what makes this hobby so wonderful, after all the hard work you can stand back and look at you A with a big grin on your face and say " my efforts were not in vain "

Happy Model A,ing.

Looking quite nice. What type/brand of paint did you shoot? Also how much paint did it take? Don't forget to share as it comes togeteher. Thanks.

I agree with Domino, please post paint type and amount of paint used, it would be very helpfull to those of us who are not as far along.

The paint I used was from Sherwin Williams in their Dimension series (4th). It was a two stage but I used another manufacturers clear coat, which I can identify tonight when I get home. I had as I remember about 3 quarts of the red to begin with and probably have about 1-1/2 quart left. I still have the hood to do. The black I believe I used about a quart. Area-wise, the proportion seems about right. I put on about 2-3 coats of color. I have so far put on 2 coats of clear and plan on putting on another two coats tomorrow night. I need to do a bit of cleanup on some minor goofs in the clear coat. The painting was easy compared with the masking. That took me about 5 hours to mask for the black (wanted to protect well from overspray). I had minor touchup to do where the fineline pulled away in the window corners. My plastic sheeting paint booth in the garage worked well and was easy to set up with ropes and clothes pins. Paint sure travels so protection is a must unless you want everything to be red! I painted the red on Saturday, masked on Sunday, and black on Monday along with clear on Monday and finish Wednesday (car club meeting Tuesday). A friend that owns a custom paint shop has given me lots of pointers and assistance on the painting and body work. Without his help it may not have turned out so nice.

The color I chose was a joint effort between my wife and me. I did a lot of searching on the Internet for colors and found one we really liked. We went around the car dealers and looked at all the colors with a pic of the car in my hand. We found one that matched perfectly and we really loved (we both love red) and decided to go with it. I have since seen many others with similar red so did not feel as bad as I first did about not going with an original color. I am sure that ol' Henry would roll over in his grave, but the color we chose is a 2009 MAZDA color! It is called Redfire Graphite (or Metallic). The pic does not capture the true color and metallic texture. It is cool in real life! The black is basic Coach Black, two stage also and from the same series.

I will whole hartedly agree that the Model A hobby is sooo much fun. I have done all the work on this car myself, with the exception of rebuilding the engine. I have never done anything like this before and have so enjoyed learning as I go. I have gotten more satisfaction from this than I ever could have if I had sent it off to have someone else to the restoration. It may not be totally right and I may find out later that I did a few things wrong, but it is MY car and my heart and sole is in it! I have nothing but respect to those that go out and tackle such a job and see it through to completion. It is a lot of work and takes dedication. I do realize, however, that it is not for everybody. I have clocked over 650 hours of fun on this car so far and probably have another 75 to go before it will hit the road. I wonder what I will do after this is done? I am now too broke to start another one and my wife would kill me (unless we got a super deal on a '29 roadster pickup).

Enough babeling. I started out to just answer the questions about paint and my fingers got carried away. Hope my babeling helps someone......

Thank you very much for answering the questions. I can appreciate your feelings of pride and satisfaction as I had the same when I finally got the 30 townsedan painted - see avatar to left.

It looks very nice! Congradulations! I will probably be at this step before long and I am looking at various paint types and their costs. PPG Concept is great, but pricey, about $250 a gal. as I understand. Omni is about $100 a gal, Centari ?????. The world of paints is a very diverse one! One I know nothing about! Can you share with us some of the particulars?
