I want to replace the rear fenders on my 31 four door slant windshield.
any suggestions to name brand is the best and where to purchase them.
Also what kind of problems can I expect while installing them.

Welcome to the "Barn". At the top of the page there is a "search" function. There have been "many" posts about fenders. I think there may be only one or two manufacturers, Howell's and Brookeville Roadsters. Most have come to the conclusion that originals fit much better. Front fenders from any 31 will be OK but I believe the rears may be unique to a slant. Others will chime in I'm sure.
An alternative is fiberglass but again I think the rears are unique to a slant window.

It is my understanding that the 31 S/W Sedans use the same rear fender as the other 30/31 sedans with the exception of a dimple in the skirt to clear a body rivet.

X3 !!! I don't think that any of the repro sedan rear fenders are very good in fit or finish. Its probably best to look for good original rear sedan fenders at swap meets.

As others have said, the '31 rear "sedan type" fender has the clearance dimple stamped into the skirt. It is used on your slantwindow sedan as well as the Tudor, standard phaeton(4 dr.), straightwindow 4 drs., and Vicky(maybe some commercial body types too). The '30 is the same without the dimple and minor differences such as mounting hole shapes. To my knowledge there is only one repro manufacturer of steel ones, I believe in southern Ohio, regardless of who retails them. Again, as stated they are not the greatest and will take rework. You can modify them or '30s for a dimple. If your originals are not too bad, assuming that's what you have, the $600 or so for repros may be better spent on restoring them.

So it begs the question, if someone cannot 'slice & dice' the repros to make them fit, ...then how can they make repairs to the average Sedan fenders that are available?

The answer is someone can. It may not be the owner. Again, if the originals are not too bad and they started life fitting, it may be easier reworking them back than recreating repros that never fit. Therefore, the $600+ might repair the originals by someone who has that talent.

FLOP could......................

Yes, but y'all are missing the point. How many people who need fenders have the talent of Flop? The repro fenders can be made to fit just fine however it takes some work, ....which most original rear fenders do too!! ;)

First rule go for NOS.
Second rule repair the original.
Third rule find a better original fender and repair.
Fourth rule use a aftermarket fender and be ready to rework it.
It all comes down to cost. A good original fender with no holes will take at least a day to do the metal and then another day to clean it up and then a couple of days to lead or plastic fill. 32 hours X repair rate = $ And now your ready for prep and paint. NOS usually wins if you can find one.

This is the way I try to work it and it's usually best for all involved. Tinbasher

P.S. I think Brent been in this business as long as I have, I like his thoughts. JP
