So, I picked my 410 Fe powered '56 Customline from the body shop and noticed a miss . I took a quick look and headed for home, which is only 4 miles away. I thought it was possibly a fouled plug from the body shop personnel letting it sit there loping away at idle before it warmed up.
On the way home I thought it stopped missing, so I gave it a little throttle while in 4th gear and experienced a loud back-fire. When I got home I found a bad connection at # 3cyl.
I fixed it and it was running normal once again.
Later that evening I drove it around and all seemed normal except it was running about 5-10 degrees hotter than what would be normal, so I kicked on the fans and it came back down to 185.
Before heading home I took it to my favorite factory area tuning strip and went through 1st and 2nd gear shifting at 4,500 rpm. The car felt very strong, but then I noticed a miss again. I thought it was the plug wire again, but then I noticed smoke ( steam) from the right pipe. I got it home and took it apart to find the head gasket blown at cylinders 3 & 4. The gasket was blown into the lifter valley. Very curious that it was the same cylinder involved that had the plug wire incident that caused the earlier, rather dramatic, back-fire.
Any thoughts on this?? Did the back-fire set this up??Not sure what to think, but it seems very coincidental.
By the way, this engine has been together for over 7 years, has 8,000 miles on it and has been on several 1/4 mile trips in the past..
