FE 352/390 flywheel

I'm not having much luck finding a early standard FE flywheel so does anyone know if you can remove ring gear from a later 184 tooth flywheel and install a earlier 153 tooth ring gear. This is a standard trans. flywheel. If so who carries ring gears?

They are different diameters, so you have to find the right one. A later one from a truck may work, or try Summit. Looked at Summit, all they show is a 184 tooth flywheel for the 352 or 390.

The ring gear inside diameter is the same for both the 153 and 184 tooth flywheels. The registers that hold the starter ring gears in place are different on the early versus the late standard shift flywheels which can create a problem if using the wrong starter for which the flywheel was designed. For the 1958-1964 flywheels, the ring gear register is on the engine side of the flywheel while on the 1965-1976 flywheels that register is on the clutch side of the flywheel. This has to do with the direction which the starter bendix engages. I trust this helps. Ted Eaton.
