Fan blade

Hello again….I have just installed my leakless water pump. I have lined up the woodruff key and tightened the castle nut but their seems to be too much slop when I jiggle the fan blade. Will that go away when I attach the fan belt or is their something I’m doing wrong?

What do you mean by "slop"?
Does the blade rock on the shaft or is it an in and out motion of the shaft in the pump?
Point is, there should be no rocking of the blade on the shaft and very slight in and out motion of the pump shaft.
Check your book and re-do it before driving

Blade rocks as if the woodruff keyway is a bit worn? I put a lock washer behind the castle nut and tightened. Put the cotter pin through and it is tight and happy. Is that a No No?

No rubbing sounds when you spin the fan blade? If not, I would say your good to go. Just check things after you go out for the first test run.

Enjoy.

Nope she spins nice with no unusual sounds LOL. I will take it for a buzz asap hopefully have everything back together in a few days. Thanks for the help!

I did have a new pump that the pulley slightly rubbed the casting and sounded worse than it was, a little filing fixed that.It was tight not loose.

The fan blade should not rock back and forth on the spindle. When I purchased my car, the fan blade was tight, but within a few thousand miles it loosened and gauled out the inside of the fan hub. The result was a wobbly fan.

Make sure you tighten the fan well, and check for fan blade wobble at each oil change. A loose fan can be deadly.

Movement means wear or improper taper on the shaft. It this an original fan or reproduction. Some tapers on the new replacement shafts have been wrong.

if anyone wants, they can have my old two blade if they want it. I went to the six-blade gang and have no use for my old fan. its a two blade aluminum it fits nicely on my shafts I have. send me a message if you want it.

Hi okra, thanks for the heads up, met some of the members in the club a while back and stopped by. going to join once i save up for the membership and have been rolling the odometer a bit. thanks for letting me know

One of the issues with the aluminum fan blades early on was the "taper" in the center hole. For some reason the manufacturer was leaving the hole in the "as cast" condition - and counting on accurate mold dimensioning to bring it to a consistent and correct taper. Instead what they were creating was a "two taper" hole - i.e. the hole taper was not consistent from inside to outside. Not barrel shaped but a wasp-waisted hole.

It is said that the early fans could be torqued home, run for awhile (possibly a short while) and then re-torqued to more fully seat them. This counts on "stretching" of the hub casting and an interference fit to develop between the hub and shaft.

More recent aluminum fans supposedly have the hole "machined" to the proper taper, and seating on the taper is immediate - a re-torque is not required (although recommended as aluminum IS prone to stretch.)

Vince Falter in his seminal work at www.fordgarage.com also discusses inaccuracies seen in the actual pump shaft/taper. The worst being an inconsistent taper more or less the reverse of described for the fan hub hole. A "barrel shaped" taper if you will. Again, many with aluminum fans found the seating of the hub to shaft "insecure." And a re-torque required.

So I really don't have a way to universally address the issue except to "check all your parts together before assembly" - and this to identify any "quality issues" (what this is.)

If you still have the fan I would be interested in it. Tried messaging but not working for you now.
