Fan Belt Tension

I just purchased a 1929 Closed Cab Pickup. The previous owner had a friend install a rebuilt generator and he apparently forgot to tighten the fan belt properly or in the hour I have run it since getting it home it has loosened up. I'm no stranger to shade tree work but before I tighten the thing I'd like to know if there is a proper tension and or tension test of which I should be mindful.

Without pulling out the books and giving you a technical answer, just tight enough so the generator turns and charges. You do not want it too tight.

Midway between the generator and water pump, I can move my belt in and out about 1 1/2". Nothing slips and there is no strain on the bearings or belt.
