Like has been said, do not over tighten the belt. you'll just wipe out the water pumps and generator bushings or bearings. You want a little bit of play in the belt in the longest section of it. It doesn't have to be super tight and it shouldn't be. I do the same thing as you guys and drive a block of wood under the generator to raise it, if it's still stock and centered on the intake. That way I'm not scratching up anything. I was fleet mechanic, we checked belts on every service, if they had a lot of slop, we tighten them up a bit but never too tight. We always left a little up and down movement in the belts, "a little bit". One thing guys do is use the wrong width belts. The correct width belt will ride on the sides of the pulleys, never on the bottom of there grooves. It gets its strength from the friction against both sides of the bevels.
