Falcon Shifter HELP !!! Please

The shifter on my 1964 Falcon Sprint hits the center console when I put it in 4th gear, I can get it in 4th but it hits the console.
Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to correct this problem? This sprint has the original 260V8, 4 speed top loader transmission, and shifter
