Falcon Carburetor Problems

hi, I can't get my 65 falcon to run well. 6 cyl. 200 engine with holly 1940 single carb. Rough idle I can deal with but bucking or hesitation, say under a load. I'm considering buying a New Universal Carb. But is this a good answer? I don't mind spending the $400 plus dollars if I could be sure this will work. Really could use some experienced advice. Would rebuilding work? I live in Ma. Any recommendations would be welcome. Thanks Gino 508-221-4230

See how much a new Holley carburetor is. Or a quality rebuild, I know Summit has them. Or find a carburetor shop locally. Rebuilts are $150 more or less, shops charge about the same. The shop I use has a service where you bring the car back after installation and they adjust it at no extra charge. (Allstate Carburetor, Central Islip, NY)

How handy are you? This is probably the easiest one to rebuild, no special tools. Everything has to be squeaky clean first and foremost and just follow the kit instructions. Take lots of pictures as you go, most important capture it from all sides before stripping it down. Most kits have a gauge for setting the float height.

Before condemning the carb, I would test the vacuum advance on your distributor to see if applying vacuum truly is moving the dizzy breaker plate. This can be done using a mity-vac, but don't pump the trigger. you only need a little bit of vacuum. If the breaker plate moves, hold what ya got and see if the breaker plate holds it's position. If it does not, and moves back to home plate, your vacuum canister rubber diaphragm is busted and needs to be replaced. This would cause hesitation upon acceleration. However so would other things.
BTW, the Holley 1904 carb is probably the EASIEST carb in the world to rebuild and I encourage doing it yourself if you want to save money. Get a quality kit from Daytona Parts or Mikes carburetor parts.
First thing to do is check for any looseness in the butterfly shaft in the base of the carb. If it is sloppy, ask Sal Cicala (on this forum) if he can bore out and install bushing for you and have him finish the rebuild.
If shaft is okay, I would tackle the job myself. You'd be surprised how quickly you can learn to rebuild this thing effectively.
