Failure of oil pump

Somewhere on the forum someone posted the address to the company that originally manufactured the pumps for Ford which is still in business. I looked them up and the rebuild kit was something like $25. That gave you the gears and gaskets-all US made.

I had an oil pump shaft break 2 years ago. I took the engine out to replace the transmission. The engine was strong and running fine. I set it on a dolly and reinstalled it a few weeks later. The engine lasted about 2 miles. I pulled it again and discovered the center main was destroyed and the other 2 were soon to go. I got the engine rebuilt and reinstalled it.

I have no idea why the pump casing split.

That is a roll pin holding the gear to the shaft. There was no sign on the gear that anything had gotten wedged in the gears. In the third picture is a little arrow I drew on the paper towel the gear rested upon for the picture. If you blow the picture up a tad you will see the arrow points to a round outline on the gear tooth, such as there may be a hole there with a different color of metal in it. I looked at it under light with a magnifying lens and still not sure what that is. Any ideas?

d.j.moordigian, there is no true arc on the pump anywhere and no broken end of a true arc, either internal, nor external has been found in the oil I drained. I also di-sected the filter looking for metal and found none.

looks like bad machine work to me. The shaft broke right at the end of the "radius" which was probably not done smoothly.

Stan's 59ab pump has been in my pressurized engine for 50K miles, no problems.

Hey Dave,
I'm with Rex thinking , that it is hard to believe that the 'tang' didn't give before that much larger shaft broke. That's amazing.
Did you check the tang for damage. And, usually when a large shaft , like that one, breaks....you can see where a FRESH shiny area and an different colored area indicating a defective metal had already started fracture ?
