F100 front brakes..just what years are usable?

I just picked up a set of the square back Ford spindles (1942?) to convert juice brakes on to my 34 Ford.I was planning on using F100 brakes.Just how late a model is interchangeable? I have heard as late as 1963 can be used.Anybody used early 60s F100 on their 37-48 spindles?They would probably be easier to find than the 50s brakes.
 
I am not sure BUT I do not think the F-100 Brakes are a direct bolt on to your spindles. I think the spindles need to be machined to fit the F-100 bearings. There also may be other modifications necessary.

The Early V-8 Garage has retro fit kits components to convert your '34 to hydraulic Brakes. (626) 338-2282. They are very knowledgable and helpful.

Just a thought.

The only thing wrong with this is that your spindles have a tapered transition from the square-back to the spindle shaft itself, a smooth tapered curve. The back-side of the inner bearing (that the hamb thread provides) has a sharp edge, so the two don't mate up properly. I would think the bearing could be machined, or find a different part #? I wouldn't think machining the spindle would be a good idea... Other than that everything fits like it should.
 
I have done this a couple of times. I love the brakes. You grind a radius on the back of the inner bearing to fit the spindle. Wash well and install. The last year for the interchangeable hole pattern on the backing plates is in the late 50's. I know a 60 has a different mounting arrangement. The F-1 and F-100 backing plats are the same as are the shoes. The hubs and drums are the difference. I prefer the F-1 style.

I see wire wheels in your avatar photo... you cannot use these with
F-1 or F-100 brakes, as they are only 11" diameter AND the drum shape in not compatible. Someone will maybe post that you can make/use adaptors, but such a thing would make your truck be double-ugly, as the wheels would stick way out and the footprint of the tire would be WAY beyond a line through the kinpin and cause the tire to scrub badly, handle badly, steer badly etc.

The new 12" Bendix brakes (or originals if you can find them) will fit
with original 40-48 hubs/drums that are compatible with the wire wheels by adding a support ring. You DO NOT need to change the spindles. The original spindles can be adapted to hydraulic brakes with no problems, thus retaining the original LH steering arm that the drag link connects to. The "hairpin" and other bolt-on arms commonly used with the later (37-41 or 42-48) spindles are made
incorrectly (always have been) and cause other problems that you do not need and can be avoided by using the original spindles. The new Bendix brakes are available in the same pattern to fit, and all that is needed is a pair of bearing spacers and a special kingpin kit.
Aside from the above, everything else is available to convert your
PU using the original pedals and installs completely using only factory holes.

As with (original) Lincoln-Bendix brakes, the F-100's ARE a bolt on to 42-48 spindles, but 37-41 (round) spindles require grinding for clearance at the top. The new reproduction Lincoln-Bendix brakes
"almost" fit the 42-48 spindles; requires some grinding around the
mounting flange/bolt holes.

Otherwise, the inner bearing must be changed. The bearing that (sort of) fits has no radius where it meets the base of the spindle shaft, so the bearing inner race must be ground to a radius like the original 32-48 bearing has. I am repeating what others have already posted...sorry.

Thanks for the info and the link. Good information.Bummer about the wire wheels.I was hoping to keep them on the truck.Can't use any of the original front end parts,they were all rusted too badly.I may go another route if I can't use the wires,that was the main reason for wanting the F100 brakes and bolt pattern.
 
you can use 35 wire wheels, with a spacer ring, Vern Tardal sells the rings, as do others, American Rodder published an article on how to do the conversion. I have F1 brakes on my 41 truck, and have installed several for other people, not very hard to do. I have the article from AR if you want e-mail me directly alan48@charter.net

The ones I have seen are as I described... unless there is something
different about the ones currently available???
