Expecting too much from '40 steering box?

Am now waiting for new steering box to come back from media blaster along with new bearings, races, shims & seal. Will put together new box next week & see what I get, that doesn't work, sending it all off to an expert rebuilder.

If you decide to send it off these guys are great. They did my steering box for my 38. Steers great with no play. I tried the Mac's parts and doing it myself and it did not work to my expectations. Took it to Lares and made it like brand new. They also can replace the bushings with bearings. If you hang on to the receipt a lifetime warranty which I know they stand behind 100%.

Thank you, bookmarked them on my computer.

It just might be that in light of the modifications you have made to the front end on your car, and the big/little tires, the '40 steering gear box is not up to the job you are expecting it to do.
A much better choice might have been a Corvair or a Vega steering gear box.

Bill, the non stock parts in this guy's front end isn't what's causing the 3 1/2" play at the steering wheel, or the play at the pitman arm, or the fact the worm and it's bearings will assemble in the box and without gaskets won't bind. There's w good bunch of cars out there with his modifications that steer as they should.
Something in the steering box is a miss.
Martin.
