Exhaust valves

Some of my exhaust valves are running .012 the book says they should be .015 is .012 close enough or should I have the valve stems ground down. If so what kind of grinder will I need. Some where I think I saw where they used a drill sharpener to grind the stems.

.012" is a bit tight especially depending on which camshaft you're using. Depending on the cam the spec can range form .015-.022".

Apparently you have original type lifters. You might be able to find a garage with a valve grinder that can trim the ends of the valves.
