Exhaust Pipe Length

Didn't see this when I searched...

Why does the Model A exhaust pipe end under the car ? Wouldn't it be better to extend it past the end of the car for better venting of the exhaust fumes ?

The station wagons have an extended tailpipe that makes a detour to the center of the body but still does not extend to the edge of the body.

Has anyone extended their exhaust pipe ?

Marc, a friend in our local club who is much more concerned than I am about carbon monoxide in his closed Model A has extended the tail pipe with metal flex out beyond the rear bumper. it looks OK, but I feel no compulsion to do likewise. he also replaced the manifold heater with a hot water heater for the same reason...

But why did the engineers not extend the exhaust pipe in the original design ?
