Well why wouldn't the conductive gray iron casting with flowing hot gases be 500 deg F plus? After all in a few short inches away from the exhaust port it is 1,300 deg F. in the combustion chamber.
At times and during the idea conditions the Ford Model 'A' exhaust manifold can glow red hot.
So many exhaust and intake manifold combinations bolted together warp so much that they fail to remain flat once removed from the bock. They won't bolt back on nicely.
Each manifold assembly ought to be checked with a straight edge before being dogged back down onto the block. These can be bolted together and machined flat or just replaced. Replacements need to be checked for flatness too.
Remember, if the manifolds are not flat, castings don't bend.....crack!
HINT: Use the one piece copper gasket without those rings inserted into the ports. These never seal.
