Excelsiors and early wires

Most of the guys in this area have thrown away the tubes from their Excelsior radials and are successfully going tubeless because they were having to many flats with the tubes. I have a pair of 35 wires for the 500/16's and a pair of widened to 5 inches 32 wires for the 700/18's I'm wondering if the tires will stay on the rim mounted tubeless?

Gary....We can't comment on the specific wheels that you're talking about, but Heard is running 5.50R-16 Excelsiors (TUBELESS) on 4" 1940 wheels, as well as 7.50R-16 Excelsiors (TUBELESS) on 4-1/2" '47 Ford wheels on his 3-window coupe with nothing but pleasureful miles. Coop/AMERICAN

They look & work great on fendered cars. I wish they were a tad more "vintage" looking for open wheeled cars.

I've heard of guys painting the inner rim with Gyptol to reduce any chance of air leakage.

I think the bigger problem is there isn’t any quality tubes readily available out there. I have switched over to racing tubes. The bad thing is they are about 90.00$ each. They are twice as thick as normal tubes.

I've offered this information previously....On my 35, I run radial tires on Kelsey Hayes wires....because the spokes protrude into the well, I must run tubes. I run 6.00 16 tractor tubes. These are heavy duty and have the fat valve stem to suit early rims. They have proven trouble free.

His wheels are the stock '35's and spokes are welded so issue with leaks. On a '35 roadster I built back in 2006 I had 15" Kelsey adjustables.Had the wheels powdercoated then we used tubes of silicone sealer to seal where the spoke nipple and spoke protruded into the drop center. Ran tubeless radials and no leaks.
