Exaust crossover pipe

Well this may have been covered here but I cannot find anything in the search area, I am new to the flat heads and wanted to know the purpose of the exaust crossover pipe? Can the pipe be eliminated without any problems, and do they make anything to cap them off using the stock pipes. I have looked at Reds headers but wanted to see other options first, I have a 1950 Custom . Thanks for the help with any information.

The cross over pipe is used for the stock single exhaust. If you want to convert to dual exhaust you can use the stock exhaust manifolds and fabricate the driver’s side exhaust pipe. When your '50 was new, Ford had a dual exhaust conversion kit (used mostly on Police Cars as I understand it). For a cleaner installation, I would go with Red's Headers and extensions. I'm also partial to Brockman Mellow-Tone steel packed mufflers.

Bob Drake has the left side replacement manifold with the pipe coming off the rear with a block off plate for the right side and he also has a right side manifold set up for duals. This is like the original police car dual setup. I have the left manifold, but haven't installed it yet.

Here is a pic for you. Good explanations though.
