Escutcheon removal grrrr

HMMM.. As far as drilling it out I don't think U can get the right angle to do that. Usually that area doesn't rust severely either. I'm stumped.

Sigh - ya no rust in there - guess it's back to hammer. Maybe I'll take the 4 pounder out:)

Such a little part. I have time & patients....and lot of vodka:)

Someone on the barn suggested sliding 2 wood clothes pin halves between the escutcheon and the door panel so you get a clear shot at the pin. Worked for me along with a very small punch about 3/32" if I recall. It is a very frustrating process in my experience.

Cut the crank handle with a drimmel to remove it. Then you can see it better when the whole regulator has been removed. Replacement handles are not that expensive.

Here's what's worked for me on vehicles with escutcheon and pinned handle - YMMV.

Compress one side of the escutcheon and insert a long, thin nail-set (slightly smaller diameter than the pin) between it and the handle. Hold the nail-set with one hand and compress the other side of the escutcheon with your other hand. Push the pin out with the nail-set. Once you get the pin started, grab it with pliers and pull it out. If the pin is stubborn, have a helper tap on the nail-set with a hammer. The nail-set gives you something to hold on to, pound on, and leverage as necessary.

Bill's post about quantity of holes is what got me. I started with the recessed hole thinking it was handy to have a guide for the drift. I finally discovered the holes and pin 90 degrees from the first hole and removed the pin in seconds. If you are working in a recess you have the wrong hole. Probably not the case since you have just two holes (180 degrees apart?)

Ok after much work I got the regulator off. YAHOO - According to the shop manual, I should be able to remove the regulator now. However, of course, it wont budge.

The screws in the upper door panel...Do they need to be removed? The way I read the shop manual, I should not have to touch them. All work is within the inside of the panel I removed - with the exception of the window handle - Am I missing anything?

Hi,

I bought the tool below, Majestic Handle Co. escutcheon tool many years ago, probably from JC Whitney. I had to beef up the pin and weld it also a long time ago.

It works by pushing the pin of the tool into the aligned holes of the handle and escutcheon. It is ramped so you can lever it to get enough clearance on the bottom, when removing the pin. When putting the assembly back on, it is pushed up from the bottom into the aligned holes of the escutcheon and handle, allowing you to put the pin down from the top.

I do like the tool sold by Drake and Mac's and I'm sure others that I hadn't seen before. It looks like it would be easier to use since you can push with your body to compress the door panel and spring behind. My tool can be tough to use it the spring doesn't want to compress easily.
