Erratic engine valve noise

Just put my engine back together after replacing some guides and grinding the valves. One valve (exhaust) had been previously ground too short .0018 and I descided to use it anyway. Now I get an erratic ticking noise at mid rpm's when warm. Will an out of adj. valve sound erratic like that and will it give me any problems other than a monument to my lazyness?
Thanks for your input guys,
Pete

Sounds like you may have a lifter (tappet) that is worn out of level to the valve or the stem is ground out of square. As the engine runs the lifters rotate so you have an erratic contact and a variable lash. Just an educated guess.

That sure makes sense about the valve. I didn't change it but the one that I changed out had been ground so unever, it couldn't even stand up on end. I also wondered if it might be sticking in the guide ever so often. The guide on #8 is new.
I just hate the thought of tearing it apart again to change out one valve.

Man when you had it apart you shuda fixed it. Now you got to live with it. If nothing else you could have welded the bottom and ground it to fit for almost nothing. Iceman

A tappet or block could be worn, and oval shaped. Oversize tappets are the answer to that one. I had that problem and reamed the block for Chrysler tappets, without pulling the engine!
