I belong to the San Fernando Valley Model A Club and tomorow is our clubs 50th anniversary party, lunch in. and some of us are going to dress in Era style clothes. I had been looking for what is called a Big Apple News boy Hat. with no luck finding one. I decided that how hard would it be to make one. I have a little back ground in auto upholstery so I bought some material at the fabric store $1.50 +tax. last night I study pictures of the style of hat i wanted and preceded to sew one up. took about 1 1/2 hours, I think it came out fairly good and not bad for under $2.00. I know I am funny looking so just look at the hat and not at my face:D I will be wearing this hat with a pair of denim overalls and white button down shirt

Hey Tracy. That hat looks great. Maybe wear that hat to Bobs next friday nite. What ya think? Mark.

Model A Man - Great job on the hat !

I'm a "hat guy" too, and it is SOOO hard to find correct-looking hats from the pre-WW II era.

The cap you made is very correct looking - the authentic cap from that time was made up of eight wedges ( some call it an "eight-pie" cap), and had LOT of material in it, to create wide overhang.

I once had an original cap, a summer cap, made from green & white "rattan" / plaiting - it was woven. I (mistakenly) tired to scrub the yellowed patina off it and only succeeded in the cap disinegrating in the process... that was thirty+ yeas ago and I'm still sad over it... :(

Straw boaters are also "Correct", as are broad-brimmed felt hats such as a Borsalino or Homburg. If you're wearing bib-overalls, dress-shirt and tie, then you could wear a derby... but then you should also be driving a Model T... :D

I have a nice derby hat I like to wear at times. I don't like change!

I think Henry still wore his derby during the late 20's.

...and Laural and Hardy wore thier derby's from the 1920's thru thier last movie in 1950/51,.... that's got to be the record :D.
