Engine's got me stumped?- No Power

So ah .. Tim .. what is your new opinion of vacuum gauges?

Ha Ha, same as before. It's the best tool for determining intake/valve/piston condition. Again the lesson is start simple and work from there. Compression test and vacuum gauges are still the best diagnosis things we have, that and a piece of fuel line to listen for valve train noise. Lesson learned for sure. IT just didn't show up until I finally saw it at dusk in the shadow of the garage door and on my face while looking down the carb.

one thing I did think of last night and forgot to mention was to check the lift, as Mart suggests. If this happened suddenly, I would not discount a broken spring.

Tim: You mention the engine would "pop & buck" - valves sticking. Try MMO down the carb and see it that corrects the problem - had that happen on an 81a v8. Could be the valve spring tension is not to spec or the springs are broken.

Tim: You mentioned the engine would "pop and buck." Try pouring MMO down the carb to lube the valve stems with the engine running. If that helps, put about 12ozs in gas tank. If no positive results, check valve spring tension - weak or broken?

I thought what have I got to lose soJust finished trying this. Forgot about the smoke show involved :D. Neighbors cam over to make sure the crazy mechanical genius wasn't in a burning garage. But some positive results came from this. It has alot less pop&buck now and will rev up alot easier. It still pops intermitently which tells me it's definantly a sticky or very minor burnt valve. When it pops it pops out the tailpipe and a little through the carb. I think I just cleaned and lubricated the guides and may have removed some carbon. I am going to drive it and see how the power is. I'll report back. Man I miss good quality gasoline with all the right additives to make and engine run good! Still needs a valve job and some springs though so I'll just pick a weekend and get it done.

Thanks again,

Tim
