At the risk of rustling feathers I have a question about the engines for 40/41.

I have long know that the 4 and a couple of sizes of 8's were produced however recently I saw a thread here about a 6 cylinder. In my lit. I don't find that option listed anyplace however I just saw that there are (2) 40's trucks on the Hemming's site with 6's. Can you guys shed a bit of light on this subject?

thanks.

Mark

if you look at mid year 1941 and after big truck front cross member-they have a definite "swoop" to them to accomodated the longer 6 cylinder engine--rumor is that the army wanted six cylinder engines?? the parts book also will give you the seriel number change--also the hood latch bracket and top of the grill changed to allow for a longer engine

I think in 1941 they came out with a 4cyl engine. I think they only had it a couple of years 41-42 It was just like the Ford tractor 8N Walt

The 9N engine was definitely a short timer for 41/42. The last of the V8-60 was in 40 but there were still 221 & 239 engines. The 226 G model 6-cylinder was 90 Hp for 41 and was not a bad engine considering Henry's Chevy six prejudice.

Walt they even used a tractor radiator and cap under the hood--really looks weird even for Ford

The only difference I've found is the truck engine blocks were cast to allow a fuel pump on the passenger side. The original tractor engines were gravity fed.

Yes, I know they had a fuel pump. I've only seen one in real life. About 35 years ago one pulled into the parking lot at a machine shop I used to work. I went out and looked it over. He just got it out of the body shop, beautifull coal black. He opened the hood, that little engine sure look dinky in that engine bay. Seems I've built a million of those 8n-9n tractor engines. I think they only had like 20hp. I almost bought one of those with the pump in some kind of a power unit. It had like a 39 Ford trans on the back with some kind of an attachment on the rear to hook something to. It had a cowl with gauges and a radiator with and a hood. It was a factory unit, not homemade. I thought I wanted it just to restore but I never picked it up. Walt

The 41 PU tailgate is just like the 40 except it doesn't have the V8 logo. One gate, no matter which engine. Wonder what a 4 or 6 cylinder stylized logo might have looked like if Ford would have matched them up to the engine. Yikes!!:eek:::D
