Engine year?

I have a Ford V8 flathead I want to put in my 1935 Ford model 51. The heads are marked 59 AB and have the cooling hose mounts/holes in the middle of the heads. The bell housing has a 59 raised on it. Crab type distirbutor on the front of the engine.

What year is this and do I need an adaptor kit to mount it to the original 35' 4 speed transmission? Thanks for any help.

My son told me the engine is marked 098L not 59 like I thought.

The transmission may be a problem as 1935 came with a 3 speed ******. Not sure what you have for the present set up.

Best you can date a 59A type engine is 1945 to 1948 unless there is a date code stamped on the intake deck. As Kerk mentioned, the standard gear box for cars & light commercials is a 3-speed top loader. The early ones have some issued with clearance in the bell area but they can be made to work with the right combination of parts in the clutch department. Only the big trucks came with a 4-speed transmission.

Other issues would be the fan and hoses to fit up to the original radiator if thats what you have. The 59A can be converted to work with the generator type fan set up if necessary and a hose set up is not hard to put together.

It's the model 51, 1 1/2 ton. So this would have a 3 speed? Only asking cause I don't know much about these and the company I bought it form said it had a 4 speed.

should mate right up...don't know if you need different clutch, pressure plate..post pics if you can....good luck.....Mike

Model 51 could be the long or short version of the big truck for 35. They used the old BB 4-speed transmission that was used from 32 thru 39 unless it has already been replaced. If that is the start of the VIN number stamped on the top of the transmission bell it sounds later. The serial number on a 35 would likely be 18- at the beginning. If it is an arbitrary casting number on the engine part of the bell housing then it may have no known meaning.

Those old BB transmissions could easily be replaced with one of the later truck transmissions if need be anyway. A 59A type motor should be no major problem to put in a 1935 Ford big truck.
