engine/trans

Currently pulling 312 and Fordo out of my 56 wagon, with body removed. Can I seperate this combo at the bellhousing and just pull out, or do I have to undo the converter to flywheel bolts? All other items are removed. Never had or worked on an automatic trans, appreciate any pointers on this.

You can just separate it at the bellhousing and pull the converter with it although it may give you more trouble than just unbolting the converter from the flex plate, assuming the engine turns.

If you pull the converter with the engine, you must drain the trans. If you don't drain, you will get trans fluid all over your floor.

Like Paul mentioned, just unbolt the 4 convertor nuts and it will come right out. Check the convertor for a drain plug and drain it from there if your going to pull it with the convertor attached. That's where the majority of the fluid is. Just draining the pan won't help.

Well, if you remove the bellhousing-to-engine bolts and pull the engine forward, the converter will just pull out with the engine no problem, but you need to go down and remove that half-moon shaped splash plate at the front of the bellhousing. While you're down there, then you can unscrew one of the converter drain plugs after removing that plate.
It would be best to pull both engine and trans as a unit then set it down on the garage floor (since the body is not there to encumber removal as a unit).
Remember that the converter is just hanging by the flexplate when the engine is pulled away from the bellhousing. So it is conceivable that you could possibly break off one of the dogs on the converter hub as the engine is pulled out, but you could accidentally knock the flywheel against the car frame center crossover member and damage the flexplate (or rivets). So if both were pulled out as a unit and set down, it would be easier to get the trans separated from the engine without doing any damage.
