Engine ticks and loses it's umph!

I put a quart of atf in a 7 quart oil pan on a 79 f250.

ran it for awhile it got rid of my lifter tick...not i know its not a flathead n an over head but it worked for me

drained it n went back to having all 7 quarts of new motor oil hasn't ticked since

I think there just may be 2 problems.. An exhaust leak may cause the noise but shouldn't cause a loss of 'umph'..

Yo, Lincoln,
I remember that method. ATF has some GOOD cleaning additives that dissolves varnish deposits in hydraulic lifters and since ATF is a good lubricant, you don't need to drain it out before your next oil change. In the meantime, it's cleaning other critical areas.:D Biill W.

Bill and Poweredbylincoln, this won't help the solid tappets in a Model A.

Didn't say it would! I wasn't suggesting it for a ticking Model A, but it wouldn't hurt anything, as a small amount of motor oil gets on the lower end of the valve stems and "might" be some help in case of very minor valve sticking from varnish deposits that are sometimes on valve stems. Shucks, I don't know everything, but I try to NEVER give "bad" advice. Bill W.

Glad you found an answer to your problem . There is a lot of wisdom on this site .

I think it is worth mentioning that there are some metal rings called exhaust manifold gland rings that fit between the manifold and block these are often missing , when fitted they help to eliminate this problem. check your exhaust manifold is not warped !!
and use the best gaskets not the cardboard ones sold in kits . might be worth getting the exhaust clamp sleeve that stops the leak between the mufffler and the manifold while your at it,, all these parts are available from Brattons or Snyders etc
Happy Fording
John
