Engine stand requirements

Planning on pulling the engine out of my 36 Phaeton. Have been told by this forum to be sure to use the exhaust manifold bolts and not the bellhousing to secure it to a regular engine stand. Is this an adapter I can make or rent?

Easy to make or buy. Attached are just a few examples, there are many other designs. Basically a 45 deg angle. You can use an exhaust manifold or gasket for a pattern. I built a plate on mine to bolt to the existing stand mount, but you can also built it with a new tube.

I've got one from Stumpy's that I no longer need since I sold my 99T motor. PM me if your interested. I'm in SoCal.

I'd like to add a caution about engine stands fitted with a side-mount for the Ford flathead V-8. Three-wheel and narrow-track four-wheel stands aren't up to safely handling the lateral loads of the cross-mounted flathead. They're just barely safe with longitudinally mounted modern engines where the loads are more closely spaced to the rotational axis.

I suggest adding some width to both sets of legs on a four-wheel stand, or doing the same on a three-wheel stand plus adding another set of wide two-wheel legs at the front.

Better still, for $130 you can buy one of the most-convenient, stable engine stands available anywhere from Harbor Freight. I used one of these as a stand for my flathead porting fixture for several years with total safety and stability, in spite of the increased rotating weight of the porting fixture being rotated many times during the course of a job. As a plus, this stand folds up to a depth of about 18-20 inches, and with three wheels on the floor is easy to move around.

FWIW, I have no connection to Harbor Freight other than as a customer. Every so often they hit one out of the park and this engine stand is one.

Walt, that's his rotisserie fixture for doing port work. I think he was suggesting the exhaust mounted type on this wide legged stand for stability.

Not sure how to PM you. Where in Socal, I am interested. Mine is a 21 stud, original I think to my 36. Are all exhaust maniford bold patterns the same?

Put your cursor OVER 51504bat's name. Left click! Then, click on the second line..."send PM to 51504bat". The rest is self-explanatory. DD
