Engine running! HG replaced. What do you think?

Other backfire causes can be bad or leaky manifold gasket and maybe even bad carb gasket or loose carburetor, all of which can lead to a lean fuel situation.

Get Les Andrews' books, you don't have them.

If I turn the fuel /air mixture screw on the carb clockwise to close it, should the engine die or keep running?
When I seat that screw the engine still runs.

Can someone confirm if you seat the fuel air mixture screw on the carb while the engine is running, the car should die. Mine runs with the screw closed.

With the GAV all the way closed it should still idle OK, GAV only effects the high speed (anything other than idle) jet.

After my engine warms up for a couple minutes I can close my valve and the engine keeps running just fine. At 1/4 turn open it runs about the same, and most guys like to run about 1/4 turn open.

Sounds like you are talking about the short idle air screw with the spring under the screw head. This screw will adjust the amount of air admitted to the gas going through the idle port in the carb throat. This is different than most carbs where this screw controls the amount of gasoline, rather than air.

My car will also keep running with the screw all the way in. I think I need to go through my carb to be sure it totally clean in all the passages.

No it should not keep running. You're sucking air from somewhere. First and most common is a sloppy throttle rod.
To tune the air idle, you open until it misses, the turn closed until it misses a set in the middle. About 1 1/2 turns open if I recall correctly.

Will not die. On my car I run it completely closed unless have just started and engine too cold cold to run well at full closed. When warm my eng runs best closed

He is not talking about the GAV, but the idle adjustment screw on the carb. I have a very well running, correctly re-built carb, and it will not run with that screw turned all the way in. However, many cars will run with the GAV closed, but I would think it better to be a tad rich instead of too lean.
