Engine Removal Time

I think everyone needs to understand, the repair shop has a mortgage/rent, electric, gas, security system, plus he has to make money. I think it is a fair price provided the hood is correct and no other damage.

seems to me you got hosed royally.
mind you, I have made equally costly mistakes and we learn from them.

I can have an engine out and stripped to the block & head in less than 2 hours without breathing hard. back in in twice that time or less. that's working alone with just a Harbor Freight hoist.

Dave, one of our local club guys, had a serious oil leak which required removing/replacing his engine several times. he got so good he could have it OUT by himself in 20 minutes.

if these guys are "professional mechanics" why are they so slow? they should be charging flat rate rather than hourly for an un-complicated process like this.

next time schedule a shop session for your local Model A club and let the bubbas help you do it FREE. if there's no local club, you need to find a better mechanic!

my two cents, and worth every penny of it

Mike, I don't begrudge them making a profit and paying their overhead;
just seems they worked at a GLACIALLY SLOW pace while charging an hourly rate.

1300 does not seem to bad for doing the job two times. I own a shop and it could have been a lot more work than a lot of people think. Of course you can always do something cheaper at home doing it your self. Bill

$1300.00 american translates into that the shop charged 56.00-57.00 per hour. i was working for 57 in 1993.

karl if you got a quality job no damage to the paint etc, you should be very happy.
in my opinion you were treated very fairly.

if the engine would have worked the first time you would have been out the door for 650.00 american what a deal.

I think that is a bit excessive. I am no expert, I have R&R'd 2 engines, it took me about 4 hours to do it myself each time. Sonny

WOW $1300.00 in labor to swap out an engine!

I'm sorry but I just can't see anyone with any mechanical skill, let alone a repair shop, working for 11 1/2 straight hours to remove and replace an engine. They did it twice for a total of 23 hours of labor and no other work to be done to the engine except bolt on the extras.

Yep and it gets worse- The quality of the job is in question See the mestoration post

another question that comes to mind is why did you have the work done without knowing what they were going to charge

Yep I could have asked them how long it would take which would have told me how much it would cost and the answer would have been "I don't know" . They could have given me a rough idea but it would have been a guess. Bearing in mind that they don't work on Model A's (other than my two) every day this is probably a fair answer.
