Engine rebuilders

I am in the market to have my engine rebuilt. I have been looking at two places, Schwalms and H and H. If anyone has any feedback on either of these I would be happy to hear it. If there is something you are not comfortable posting you could send me an email at Jdubwikk@aol.com

Thank Ford Barn and happy "A"ing.

Out of curiosity I was wondering how you came up with H & H? Much has been posted on Fordbarn, search H & H.

bash another one, we have worked with max sr and jr, good guys if you knew how many motors they do a year, its a lot .sure there can be problems, over 80 year old stuff, ryan needs to stop this kind of stuff . as my father always said nothing nice to say shut up.

Thanks to everyone who has responded to this post. I have gotten alot of good feedback and both positive and negative experiences with not just the two rebuilders I was looking into but others as well. I just want to say that I am not trying to bad mouth anyone or start a debate, I just want to get the biggest bang for my buck is all. Even though I have been around these cars for 30 years I haven't seen or done it all. Again thanks to everyone who responded I do appreciate it.

The engine in my sedan is a Schwalms and I love it. We did a vendor review and decided to have them build the engine. We have about 35,000 miles on it and it is running strong. Ora is a great guy and will give you a great engine.

I am going to take the liberty off posting my suggestion again. You can't just search "H&H" either on fordbarn or HAMB. Nothing will come back. You can use GOOGLE to find the posts. Search GOOGLE using "H&H Site fordbarn.com" and "H&H on HAMB". You will find a lot of interesting posts that are well worth reading.

I am glad to hear your experience has been good. Many others also report the same. I strongly disagree that "Ryan should stop this kind of stuff". That is called censorship. What would he stop next, the good comments about companies (which might imply that other companies are not as good)? I only hope that the people posting are basing their post on first hand experience, good or bad.

You're right, I posted too specifically. In the search threads under "engine rebuilders" there are 7 pages of titles with maybe 100-150 replies per page, So maybe 1000 relies.

I've heard nothing but good reviews about Schwalm's. Ora is a great guy. He's rebuilding my '29 sport coupe's engine right now. His business has a great history and I trust him. Plus he's only 50 minutes from my house. It was a no brainer for me.
As far as price, he's no more, or less expensive than others I talked to locally. Other rebuilders wanted to go the "modern insert" route which I didn't want.

We will find good and bad in anything. An engine can go a mile, or a million miles. These are very old hunks of cast iron. We have no idea of the past that they have experienced. The best rebuilder in the world can make an engine that can blow the next day. It is all up to a piece of metal.
We also have to take into consideration, people are all different. There are people that are as honest as the day is long, and others that will rip you off and not lose a minutes sleep.
I had a generator rebuilt. The person was very well recommended. The generator never worked. I finally brought it back to him. He had it 5 months. I never harassed him. I did call one time, he said he was too busy to get to it, but he would. I called 3 months later and said I was just going to pick it up and get another. When I went to the shop to pick it up, he was not there. I was to pay $60 for the work done. When I opened the box, he had ground off all the bolts and screws, grinding into the case, cut all the wires, removed all the brand new parts that were in it, and I got an anchor. This was a very obvious act.
While other people swear by him.
So you asked a question, and you got input. Some good, some not so good.
It is such an important question. I am glad you asked our opinion.
I hope you find the perfect fit, and you have many wonderful miles enjoying it.

In regards to your suggestion and my experience with H&H, I will "Shut Up".

Clear Enough?

If I was looking for an engine rebuilder I would appreciate input from as many people as possible. I have asked opinions on this board before and am happy with my final decisions based on Fordbarn inputs. Please don't put a rag in the mouths of experienced Barners.

My 2 cents worth is look for a rebuilder that is a enthusiast that will have hands on your engine or personally oversee all the work
Not someone who hands it an employee there just for the paycheck

Again thanks to all who posted an opinion on this thread. I value the inpit a lot. In doing this research and talking to some of the folks that were suggested I have found one willing to help by making some suggestions and looking at some photos I took. It is possible that I may not have a bad engine but maybe a fourth bad head gasket. I would have spent big money if I hadn't come here first. Thanks again for the experience that has been shared and hopwfully I will have the Kansas Clipper back on the road soon.

With four bad head gaskets it sounds like you should be looking for your problem somewhere else. Start a new thread on that topic and see what comes people suggest.
